A recent study co-authored by Tang Yinuo, a tenured associate professor at Peking University HSBC Business School, found that the political climate in local communities across the United States plays a measurable role in whether international business deals succeed or fail. The research indicates that conservative communities are more likely to resist mergers and acquisitions involving foreign companies, even when those deals promise economic benefits.
The study suggests that local political attitudes can create significant barriers for global firms seeking to expand. When a foreign company attempts to acquire a domestic business, community resistance often stems from concerns about outside influence, job security, and cultural identity. These factors can outweigh traditional financial considerations such as price premiums or projected synergies.
Tang and his co-authors analyzed deal outcomes across various U.S. regions, comparing political leanings with transaction success rates. The pattern held even after controlling for industry type, deal size, and macroeconomic conditions. The findings point to a reality that international managers often overlook: local voters and community groups can effectively block transactions through regulatory pressure, public campaigns, or political lobbying.
The research carries practical implications. Companies planning cross-border acquisitions should assess local political sentiment before committing resources. Engaging with community stakeholders early and addressing concerns about foreign ownership may improve the odds of completion. The study adds to a growing body of work showing that political factors, not just economic ones, determine how global business unfolds.
