The Fresno City Council has decided to delay a vote on an ordinance that would strip the Fresno Business Journal and the Fresno Bee of their status as designated newspapers for public legal notices. The move, which was initially on the agenda for a final vote, was tabled after council members raised concerns about public access and the potential cost of shifting to alternative platforms.
Under current city policy, certain government actions, such as zoning changes, contract bids, and public hearings, must be published in specific local newspapers to ensure transparency. The proposed change would have removed the two named publications from that requirement, allowing the city to post notices on its own website and through other digital channels. Supporters argued that this would save taxpayer money and modernize the notification process, noting that print circulation has declined sharply in recent years.
However, opponents, including local media advocates and some council members, warned that eliminating print requirements could reduce public awareness, particularly among older residents and those without reliable internet access. They also pointed out that legal notices provide a steady revenue stream for local papers, which are already struggling financially. The council decided to table the measure for further study, directing staff to explore a hybrid model that might keep print options while also expanding digital reach. A revised proposal is expected to return for discussion within the next few months.
