Downtown business owners rail against revised paid parking rules

Downtown business owners rail against revised paid parking rules

Just five days after the city rolled out its revamped paid parking system, a pair of downtown Sarasota business owners have successfully pushed the issue back onto the City Commission's agenda. The owners argue that the newly revised rules are hurting foot traffic and driving customers away from local shops and restaurants.

The revised program, which went into effect earlier this week, expanded paid parking hours and increased rates in several high-traffic zones. City officials had described the changes as a necessary step to manage congestion and generate revenue for downtown improvements. But the business owners say the timing and scope of the changes were poorly communicated and unfairly target the small businesses that rely on quick, convenient access for their clientele.

During a tense commission meeting, one owner described a noticeable drop in lunchtime customers, claiming that regulars are now choosing to eat elsewhere to avoid the higher fees. Another owner presented data showing a 15 percent decline in sales since the new meters went live. They are asking the commission to roll back the extended hours and consider a grace period for first-time violators.

The commission has agreed to revisit the policy at a special workshop next week. Some members expressed frustration that the rollout was rushed without sufficient input from the business community. For now, the new rules remain in effect, but the pressure is mounting for a quick revision.
