China’s exports pick up in August, jumping 25% on strong demand for autos and high tech goods

China's customs agency reported Tuesday that the country's exports accelerated sharply in August, rising 25% compared to the same period last year. The jump was driven largely by sustained global demand for Chinese-made automobiles and high-tech products, signaling resilience in the world's second-largest economy despite ongoing trade tensions and slower domestic consumption.

The latest figures show a notable pickup from July's pace, when exports grew at a more modest rate. Analysts had expected a slight cooling, but the actual data came in well above forecasts. Strong shipments of electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductor-related equipment led the charge, while traditional categories like textiles and furniture also posted solid gains.

Imports, however, grew at a slower clip, up roughly 5% year on year, reflecting softer internal demand and lower commodity prices. That widening trade surplus could add pressure on trading partners, particularly the United States and European Union, which have been scrutinizing China's export-driven model.

Customs officials attributed the export strength to improving supply chains and a competitive edge in emerging industries. They also noted that demand from Southeast Asia and Latin America helped offset weaker orders from some Western markets.

Still, economists caution that the August surge may not be sustainable. Order backlogs from earlier in the year are fading, and new export orders in recent surveys have turned cautious. With global growth slowing and shipping costs volatile, the coming months could see a more moderate trajectory.

For now, the data offers a bright spot for policymakers who are trying to shore up confidence in the economy. The government has rolled out a series of stimulus measures aimed at boosting domestic spending, but exports remain a critical pillar of growth. Whether that pillar holds will depend on how long overseas buyers keep placing orders for Chinese goods.
