Local businesses in Seattle's Leschi neighborhood say they were caught off guard this week when city crews abruptly blocked access to storefronts as part of a marina redevelopment plan. The sudden move sparked immediate backlash from shop owners and residents, leading the city to pause the project just days after work began.
The redevelopment, which aimed to upgrade docks and public spaces at the Leschi Marina, had been in the planning stages for months. But business owners claim they received little to no warning about the construction timeline or the extent of the disruptions. Some reported losing foot traffic overnight, with barriers blocking the main entrances to their shops and restaurants.
In response to the outcry, Seattle officials announced a temporary halt to the work. A spokesperson said the city will now hold additional community meetings to address concerns and clarify the project's scope before moving forward. The pause is meant to give local businesses time to prepare for any future closures or detours.
For now, the marina area remains in a state of limbo. Business owners say they support improvements to the waterfront but want a more transparent process going forward. The city has not announced a new start date for the redevelopment.
