SpaceX is reportedly considering turning its massive Colossus satellite project into a separate business unit, following a recent agreement with the company Reflection. The deal, which was disclosed by CNBC's Deirdre Bosa, signals that what began as an internal infrastructure initiative could now operate as its own profit center within Elon Musk's space empire.
Colossus, a highly secretive program, is believed to involve a network of large, powerful satellites designed for advanced communications and data relay. The new arrangement with Reflection, a firm focused on space-based imagery and analytics, suggests that SpaceX sees commercial potential beyond simply supporting its Starlink internet constellation or launching rockets. Under the reported terms, Reflection will use Colossus capacity for its own services, marking the first major external customer for the project.
Industry analysts note that spinning off Colossus would allow SpaceX to attract outside investment and partners without diluting its core launch business. It would also create a dedicated revenue stream separate from government contracts and Starlink subscriptions. The move mirrors how SpaceX previously separated its Starlink division, which now generates billions in annual sales.
Neither SpaceX nor Reflection has issued a formal statement, but sources familiar with the talks say the deal is already in its early implementation phase. If successful, Colossus could become the third major business line for SpaceX, alongside launch services and satellite internet. The development underscores how the company continues to expand its footprint in the space economy, leveraging its engineering muscle to open new markets.
