OpenAI Not Ready for Public Markets, Altman Says

OpenAI Not Ready for Public Markets, Altman Says

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that the company is unlikely to pursue an initial public offering in 2026, pointing to concerns about artificial intelligence safety and the pressure public markets place on long term decision making.

Speaking about the company's future, Altman described the current moment as an "ill-advised" time to take OpenAI public. He explained that going public would force the company to prioritize quarterly results and shareholder returns, which could conflict with its broader mission of developing AI systems safely and responsibly.

Altman noted that some of the most important choices facing OpenAI may not produce immediate financial benefits. Those decisions, he said, could involve slowing down product releases, investing heavily in safety research, or turning away from certain commercial opportunities. Public shareholders, he argued, might not support such moves if they hurt short term profits.

The comments come as OpenAI continues to operate under a unique corporate structure that includes a capped profit arm and a nonprofit parent. That setup has already drawn scrutiny from regulators and investors alike. Altman's remarks suggest the company intends to keep that structure for now rather than rush toward Wall Street.

He did not rule out an IPO entirely, but made clear that timing matters. For OpenAI, safety and mission appear to come before market listing.
