Chicago police are investigating after a man was shot inside a business in the Washington Park neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the 600 block of East 61st Street, according to authorities.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired found a male victim inside the establishment suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition. Police have not released his identity or age.
No one is in custody, and detectives are working to determine what led to the shooting. It remains unclear whether the victim was targeted or if the attack was random. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and speaking with potential witnesses.
The shooting adds to a troubling pattern of violence in the neighborhood. Washington Park has seen a number of shootings this year, and community leaders have called for more resources to address public safety. Alderman Pat Dowell, who represents the area, said in a statement that the violence must stop and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Anyone with details about the shooting is asked to contact Chicago police or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
