Businesses along West Pike Street in Canonsburg are once again dealing with water damage after a clogged culvert on McBurney Street sent runoff flooding into their storefronts. This marks the latest in a string of similar incidents that have left owners frustrated and calling for a permanent fix.
The flooding occurred after heavy rain overwhelmed the aging drainage system, which has a history of backing up during storms. Several shops reported water entering their buildings, damaging inventory, flooring, and electrical equipment. Employees spent the morning sweeping out muddy water and assessing what could be salvaged.
One owner, who has dealt with this problem multiple times over the past year, said the repeated damage is becoming financially unsustainable. "We clean up, we repair, and then it happens again. We cannot keep operating like this," they told local reporters. Another business nearby said they lost hundreds of dollars in stock and had to close for the day.
The culvert issue is not new. Local officials have acknowledged the problem and discussed upgrades, but no concrete action has been taken so far. Some business owners are now pushing for emergency repairs and better maintenance schedules, arguing that temporary fixes are no longer enough. They want the borough to inspect the drainage system regularly and clear debris before storms hit.
Residents and shopkeepers alike are hoping that this latest flood will finally push the issue to the top of the agenda. Until then, many say they are left bracing for the next heavy rainfall, unsure if their properties will stay dry.
