The Republic of Korea's project to field advanced airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft is accelerating, with mission system integration now underway. Defense contractor L3Harris has confirmed the receipt of the first two Bombardier Global 6500 business jets, which will be extensively militarized for their new role.
The aircraft are being modified under a contract to deliver a fleet of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms to South Korea. The program utilizes L3Harris's AERIS mission system solution, a suite designed to provide long-range surveillance, battle management, and command and control capabilities from the high-altitude, long-endurance jets.
A company executive highlighted the program's progress, stating that the arrival of the initial aircraft allows critical integration work to begin and underscores the readiness of their core technology. The converted jets will significantly enhance South Korea's airborne surveillance network, extending radar and sensor coverage to monitor air and sea domains. This capability is viewed as a key component in strengthening national defense and regional security posture. The Global 6500 platform offers extended range and operational endurance, allowing for prolonged missions over critical areas. Further deliveries and conversions are expected to follow as the program advances toward full operational deployment with the South Korean military.
