Local business owners are rallying in a last-ditch effort to stop a proposed citywide ban on intoxicating hemp-derived products, calling for a mayoral veto. They argue the ordinance, recently passed by the City Council, will devastate small businesses, eliminate jobs, and unfairly target minority-owned establishments across Chicago.
The ban targets hemp-derived cannabinoids like delta-8 THC, which are currently sold in smoke shops, convenience stores, and dedicated retailers. Proponents of the ban cite concerns over unregulated products and public safety. However, a coalition of shop owners and industry representatives contends that the measure is overly broad and will crush a legitimate sector that provides adult consumers with legal alternatives.
"We're talking about hundreds of businesses facing closure overnight," said one store owner at a recent protest. "This isn't just about products; it's about people's livelihoods and the communities they support." Advocates emphasize that many of these businesses are owned by people of color and are located in neighborhoods where economic opportunity is scarce.
The industry group is urging Mayor Brandon Johnson to veto the legislation, suggesting that regulation and rigorous testing standards would be a more equitable solution than an outright prohibition. They warn that a ban would simply push the market underground, creating greater risks without addressing core safety concerns. The mayor's office has not yet indicated whether he will sign or reject the ordinance.
