More than 80 Black-owned businesses from across West Michigan gathered Sunday for the Black Business Expo, an event that gave entrepreneurs a chance to connect with customers and talk openly about the realities of running a company.
Vendors lined the hall with tables full of handmade goods, food samples, clothing lines, and service brochures. But beyond the sales pitches, many owners used the day to share honest accounts of the hurdles they face. Several mentioned difficulty getting loans from traditional banks, while others pointed to a lack of mentorship networks in the early stages of their ventures.
"It is not just about having a good product," said one business owner who launched a skincare line two years ago. "You have to fight for visibility every single day. We are here to show people that we exist and that we are serious."
Despite the challenges, the mood was upbeat. Many exhibitors reported strong foot traffic and said they made valuable connections with potential partners and customers. A few owners noted that the expo helped them realize they are not alone in their struggles.
"The energy in this room is different," said a vendor selling custom apparel. "We are rooting for each other. That is rare in business."
Organizers said the goal was not just to boost sales but to build a lasting support system for Black entrepreneurs in the region. The event also featured short talks from experienced business owners who offered practical advice on topics like marketing, pricing, and managing cash flow.
For many attendees, the expo was a reminder that success in business often comes from persistence and community, not just a great idea.
