Twyford Recycling, a tyre processing company, has had its operating permit revoked with immediate effect following concerns over fire hazards. The decision came from local authorities after inspections revealed multiple safety breaches at the facility, which handles thousands of used tyres annually.
Officials cited the high risk of spontaneous combustion in piled rubber materials, a known danger in the recycling industry. The company had reportedly failed to maintain adequate firebreaks and lacked proper water supply for firefighting. Inspectors also noted that storage areas exceeded legal limits, creating a potential for a fast-spreading blaze that could threaten nearby residential zones.
The permit removal means Twyford Recycling must cease all operations until it meets strict safety standards. A spokesperson for the regulatory body stated that the action was necessary to protect public safety and the environment. "We cannot allow businesses to operate when they pose a clear and present danger," the official said.
Local residents had previously raised concerns about smoke and odour from the site. Fire services had attended several minor incidents at the facility in the past year. The company now faces a lengthy process to regain its licence, including a full safety audit and installation of advanced fire suppression systems. Industry experts warn that similar enforcement actions may follow across the sector as regulators tighten oversight on tyre storage and recycling practices.
