Google CEO Sundar Pichai is preparing to address Stanford graduates next month, and he is bracing for a tough crowd. In a recent interview, Pichai acknowledged that many students today are restless and skeptical of big tech, and he expects some may even boo him during his commencement speech. But he offered a blunt message: whether they like it or not, this generation will have to live with the consequences of artificial intelligence.
Pichai argued that AI is not a distant future technology but a force already reshaping jobs, education, and daily life. He said graduates should not ignore the changes happening around them, even if they distrust the companies building these tools. The Google CEO emphasized that young people need to engage with AI critically, not just reject it outright. He warned that avoiding the conversation will not stop the technology from advancing.
The speech at Stanford comes at a time when tech leaders face growing scrutiny over data privacy, job displacement, and the ethical limits of AI. Pichai admitted that the industry has made mistakes and that public trust has been damaged. Still, he urged graduates to take an active role in shaping how AI develops, rather than leaving decisions solely to engineers and executives. He said the next few years will define how society handles this transformation, and those who ignore it will be left behind.
Pichai also noted that he does not expect a warm welcome. He recalled past commencement speakers who were interrupted by protests or walked out on stage to silence. But he said the point of a commencement speech is not to be liked, it is to speak honestly about the world graduates are inheriting. Whether they cheer or boo, he plans to deliver that message.
