Springfield Weighs Using Cannabis Tax Money for Small Business Grants

Springfield officials are considering a plan that would direct tax revenue from cannabis sales into grants for local small businesses. The proposed program would provide up to $100,000 to eight businesses, according to city documents outlining the idea.

The money would come from the tax the city collects on recreational cannabis sales. Supporters say the funds should go back into neighborhoods and help entrepreneurs who often struggle to secure traditional bank loans. They argue that small shops, restaurants, and service providers are the backbone of the local economy and need a boost as costs for rent, labor, and supplies remain high.

Under the draft plan, businesses would apply and go through a review process. City staff would score applicants on factors such as need, business plan, and community impact. Grants could be used for equipment, renovations, marketing, or working capital. Officials have not finalized eligibility rules, but they expect to set income limits and prioritize businesses in underserved areas.

Some council members raised questions about oversight. They want clear reporting requirements so the money is spent as promised. Others asked whether eight grants is enough to make a real difference. City staff said the program could expand in future years if revenue holds steady.
