Spirit Airlines, the budget carrier known for its playful marketing and rock-bottom ticket prices, has ceased operations immediately after 34 years in business. The airline made the announcement on Saturday, marking a sudden end to a company that once challenged the industry with its no-frills model and irreverent advertising.
Founded in 1992, Spirit grew into one of the largest low-cost carriers in the United States. It built a loyal customer base by offering bare-bones fares while charging extra for everything from carry-on bags to seat assignments. Its bright yellow planes and cheeky slogans became a familiar sight at airports across the country.
The shutdown comes after years of financial struggle. The airline faced mounting debt, rising fuel costs, and intense competition from larger rivals like Delta, American, and Southwest. A proposed merger with JetBlue was blocked by a federal judge in early 2024, leaving Spirit with few options to stay afloat. Attempts to restructure and cut costs failed to reverse the losses.
Passengers holding tickets for future flights have been advised to contact their credit card companies for refunds. The closure leaves thousands of employees without jobs and disrupts travel plans for countless travelers who relied on Spirit's low prices. Industry analysts say the collapse is a sign of how tough the budget airline market has become, especially for smaller carriers trying to survive against the big players.
