A local food truck owner is speaking out about what she calls a systemic failure in Albuquerque's business licensing process. Maria Chavez, who runs a popular taco truck on Central Avenue, says she has been waiting over four months for her annual business license renewal. The delay has forced her to operate under a temporary permit, which she says creates uncertainty and financial strain.
Chavez told reporters that she submitted her renewal paperwork in early January, well before the March deadline. Despite multiple follow-up calls and visits to city offices, she has yet to receive the final approval. "I can't plan for the summer season, I can't hire extra help, and I'm constantly worried that my temporary permit will expire before the city gets around to processing my file," she said.
The issue is not unique to Chavez. Several other small business owners in the city have reported similar delays, with some waiting up to six months for renewals that used to take a few weeks. Critics argue that the city's licensing department is understaffed and relies on outdated software, creating a bottleneck that hurts local entrepreneurs.
Chavez is calling on city officials to streamline the renewal process and provide clearer timelines. "We pay our fees on time, we follow the rules. The city needs to meet us halfway," she said. The city's economic development department has not yet responded to requests for comment.
