Michael McCarthy, executive vice president and chief financial and operating officer at Northern Essex Community College, has been appointed to the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center statewide Advisory Council. The newly formed group brings together leaders from business, government, economic development and community organizations to help shape the future of small business support across the state.
The Advisory Council was created to provide guidance on programs and services that assist entrepreneurs and small business owners. Members will offer insight on regional needs, workforce challenges and access to capital. Their input is expected to influence how the center allocates resources and develops training initiatives.
McCarthy's role at Northern Essex gives him direct experience with workforce development and community partnerships. The college serves thousands of students and works closely with local employers to align academic programs with industry demands. His financial and operational background adds a practical perspective to the council's discussions.
Small businesses remain a critical part of the Massachusetts economy, employing a large share of the state's workforce. The Advisory Council aims to strengthen that sector by connecting decision makers with on the ground expertise. McCarthy joins a diverse group tasked with identifying gaps in support and recommending strategies to fill them. The council is expected to meet regularly and report findings to state officials.
