Nessel sues Oakland County nonprofit for ‘deceptive’ business practices

According to the complaint, the nonprofit presented itself as a full-service housing counseling agency, but in practice failed to deliver the promised assistance. Investigators say the group collected fees or personal financial information from clients while providing little or no actual support, leaving many families in worse financial positions. In some cases, consumers reportedly believed they were working with a government-affiliated program, which the state says was a deliberate tactic to build trust.

Nessel's office is asking the court to dissolve the nonprofit, recover restitution for affected consumers, and impose civil penalties. The lawsuit also seeks to bar the individuals behind the operation from running any similar charitable organization in the future. The attorney general emphasized that misleading vulnerable residents during housing crises is especially harmful, given the high stakes of losing a home. The case is pending in Ingham County Circuit Court, and no hearing date has been set yet. The nonprofit has not publicly responded to the allegations.
