Latino nonprofits start their own shops to make helping small businesses their business

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From the pink neon sign on the sunshine yellow wall to the multicolored Mexican paper garlands, Mission Lotería's storefront emits cultural pride everywhere you look. After seven years of selling loteria-themed merchandise online, owner Ariana Rios decided to open a physical location in the Mission District. But getting the storefront ready required more than just finding the right space. Rios needed help navigating permits, negotiating a lease, and securing a small business loan.

That is where Latino nonprofit organizations stepped in. Across the country, Latino-led community groups are launching their own retail shops and commercial spaces to make helping small businesses their primary mission. These organizations are not just offering advice from an office. They are signing leases, renovating storefronts, and subletting space to entrepreneurs who might otherwise be priced out of gentrifying neighborhoods.

The model works in two ways. First, the nonprofit generates rental income to sustain its operations. Second, it provides affordable, short-term retail space for Latino entrepreneurs to test their concepts without signing long-term leases. In cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, similar projects have helped hundreds of vendors transition from street carts and online sales to brick-and-mortar locations.

Advocates say the approach addresses a critical gap. Traditional small business development programs often lack cultural competency or Spanish-language services. By embedding support directly in commercial corridors, these nonprofits build trust and deliver practical assistance where it is needed most. For Rios, the result was a successful opening and a growing customer base. She now employs three part-time workers and plans to expand her product line.
