Meta has pulled back a new AI feature on Instagram that let users generate images based on public posts, following a wave of backlash over privacy concerns. The company confirmed that the tool, which used publicly shared photos to create AI-generated visuals, is no longer available. The decision came after users and privacy advocates raised alarms about how their content could be repurposed without clear consent.
The feature was initially rolled out as part of Meta's broader push into generative AI. It allowed people to input prompts and receive images styled after existing public posts on the platform. Critics argued that this blurred the line between user ownership and AI training, especially since many users were unaware their photos could be used this way. Some pointed out that even "public" posts might not imply permission for AI manipulation.
Meta's reversal marks a rare concession in the face of user pushback. The company stated it is reviewing the feature's design and will consider stronger opt-in measures before any future rollout. For now, the tool is disabled, and no new AI images are being generated from Instagram's public library. The episode highlights the growing tension between social media companies' AI ambitions and users' expectations of control over their own content.
