After earning his college degree, Ryan Saltzman made a deliberate choice to step into the family business rather than pursue a separate career. He joined the wholesale grocery operation that his family has run for over a hundred years, a move that placed him directly in the middle of a legacy built on distribution, logistics, and relationships.
Saltzman now holds a leadership role in the company, which has weathered economic shifts, changing consumer habits, and industry consolidation. The business, founded more than a century ago, started as a small operation and grew into a regional supplier for independent grocery stores and restaurants. Saltzman says the transition from student to executive was not automatic. He spent time learning the warehouse floor, understanding inventory systems, and listening to longtime employees who had been with the company for decades.
The work, he notes, is not glamorous. It involves early mornings, tight margins, and constant problem-solving. But Saltzman sees value in continuing a tradition that his great-grandfather started. He believes the company's survival depends on adapting to modern supply chain demands while holding onto the personal service that built its reputation. For him, the decision to join the family business was not about obligation. It was about choosing a path where he could make a tangible impact on something that already mattered.
