How Orthofeet built a nine-figure DTC business on Shopify without an in-house developer

How Orthofeet built a nine-figure DTC business on Shopify without an in-house developer

Orthofeet has built a nine-figure direct-to-consumer business on Shopify without employing a single in-house developer. The company's approach relied on Shopify's native tooling and a small team willing to work within the platform's constraints rather than hiring engineers to customize everything.

Now the footwear brand is shifting its focus. Orthofeet is preparing to open its first owned retail store, a move that requires connecting its online operation with a physical location. To get there, the team is leaning on Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, along with customer research and Shopify POS.

The decision to open a store comes from patterns the company has seen in its customer base. Many buyers of orthopedic footwear want to try products in person before committing, and the brand believes a physical space can serve that need while feeding insights back into its ecommerce operation.

Shopify POS will handle transactions and inventory at the store, keeping data in the same system that powers the website. Sidekick is being used to help the team navigate the platform and answer operational questions without technical support.

Customer research remains central to the plan. Orthofeet is gathering feedback on store layout, product selection, and service expectations so the first location reflects what shoppers actually want rather than assumptions from the online business.

The company's story suggests that a DTC brand can reach significant scale on Shopify without building a large technical department. Orthofeet chose to stay close to the platform's standard features and invest in merchandising, marketing, and customer experience instead.

With the store launch approaching, the brand is testing whether the same lean model can carry it into physical retail. If the first location performs well, additional stores could follow, each tied into the same Shopify infrastructure that supported the online growth.
