A coalition of business leaders, trade union representatives, and politicians in Germany is urging the government to push back the country's target for achieving climate neutrality by five years. The proposal, reported in a Saturday publication, argues that the current deadline of 2045 is too ambitious given the economic strain and technological hurdles facing key industries.
The group claims that delaying the target to 2050 would ease pressure on manufacturers, energy-intensive sectors, and the automotive industry, which are struggling with high energy costs, supply chain disruptions, and the slow rollout of renewable infrastructure. Critics of the current timeline say it forces companies into costly, premature transitions that could harm competitiveness and lead to job losses.
Supporters of the delay include some members of the governing coalition, who argue that a more gradual approach would allow for better planning and investment in green technologies. However, environmental groups and climate activists have sharply condemned the proposal, warning that any postponement undermines Germany's international commitments under the Paris Agreement and risks setting a dangerous precedent for other nations.
The debate comes as Germany faces a widening gap between its climate pledges and actual emissions reductions. While the government has not officially responded to the call, the proposal is expected to fuel further political infighting ahead of upcoming budget negotiations.
