Fire damage still keeps Boardman businesses closed

Fire damage still keeps Boardman businesses closed

BOARDMAN, Ohio -- More than a month after a fire broke out at Presidential Plaza, several businesses remain shuttered as cleanup and repairs continue. The fire, which sent thick smoke through the building in late February, caused significant damage to multiple storefronts in the shopping center.

Fire officials say the blaze started in a utility area and quickly spread through shared ceiling spaces, filling the complex with heavy smoke. While firefighters contained the flames to a few units, the smoke damage was extensive. Several tenants have been unable to reopen, including a popular restaurant and a hair salon, both of which are still assessing the structural and electrical damage.

Building management has been coordinating with insurance adjusters and contractors, but the timeline for reopening remains uncertain. Some business owners have expressed frustration over the slow pace of repairs, noting that lost revenue is piling up. Others are hopeful that a full reopening could happen within the next few weeks, once ventilation systems are cleaned and drywall is replaced.

In the meantime, affected businesses have directed customers to temporary locations or online services. The plaza's remaining stores that were not impacted by the fire have continued normal operations. Local officials say they are monitoring the situation and have offered support to business owners navigating insurance claims and recovery efforts.
