Health officials report that Cyclosporiasis cases in the metro Detroit area have now exceeded 1,200, raising alarm among restaurant owners and grocery operators who fear a hit to consumer confidence. The parasitic infection, which spreads through contaminated food or water, has been linked to imported produce in past outbreaks.
Symptoms of Cyclospora include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and explosive diarrhea. The illness can last weeks if untreated, and some patients require hospitalization for dehydration. Public health agencies are urging anyone with persistent gastrointestinal distress to seek medical testing, as the infection is treatable with specific antibiotics.
For local businesses, the timing is difficult. Summer months typically see higher demand for fresh salads and raw vegetables, which are common vehicles for the parasite. Several restaurant owners in the area told reporters they have already seen a drop in customers ordering uncooked items. Some are temporarily removing certain menu options and posting notices about their produce sourcing to reassure diners.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to investigate the source of the outbreak. Officials have not yet named a specific food item or supplier, but they recommend washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly and cooking produce when possible. Consumers are also advised to be cautious at salad bars and buffets until the outbreak is contained.
