Coahoma Community College partnered with AT&T Mississippi and Digitunity on Wednesday, April 29, handing out free laptops to students and local residents during a launch event held at Safe House on the CCC campus. The effort is aimed at closing the digital divide across the region.
The distribution program focuses on fixing technology gaps throughout the college's five-county service area, which includes Bolivar, Coahoma, and Quitman counties. Organizers say the goal is to provide reliable devices to people who lack access to computers or the internet at home.
This kind of access has become a major barrier for students trying to complete coursework and for adults looking for jobs or online services. By putting laptops directly into the hands of those who need them, the partnership hopes to level the playing field for rural communities that have been left behind as more daily life moves online.
Local leaders praised the collaboration, noting that the digital gap affects everything from education to healthcare and economic opportunity. The event at Safe House marked the first wave of distributions, with more planned in the coming months to reach residents across the entire service area.
