Austin Backs Local Entrepreneurs With $2.18 Million in New Funding

The Austin City Council has approved $2.18 million in funding aimed at strengthening the city's small business community. The money will go to three organizations: PeopleFund, Kiva and the University of Texas at Austin. Each group will use its share to run programs that help local entrepreneurs launch, grow and sustain their companies.

PeopleFund, a nonprofit lender, plans to direct its portion toward loans and coaching for business owners who often struggle to secure traditional bank financing. Kiva, known for its crowdfunding platform, will use the funds to expand microloans for startups and solo operators. UT Austin will focus on research and mentoring, connecting students and faculty with small businesses that need technical help or fresh ideas.

City officials say the investment addresses a growing need. Rents, wages and operating costs have climbed steadily in recent years, squeezing margins for shops, restaurants and service providers. Many owners also face gaps in capital, marketing know-how and access to networks that larger firms take for granted.

The council framed the spending as a long-term bet rather than a quick fix. By funding several organizations at once, the city hopes to reach businesses at different stages, from someone testing an idea to an established company ready to hire.
