Community leaders, local officials, and advocacy groups from across Arkansas met Wednesday in Little Rock for the 2026 Arkansas Census Summit, marking the start of a long term statewide campaign to prepare for the 2030 Census. The gathering focused on how early planning can help ensure every resident is counted when the next national tally takes place.
Organizers said the state cannot afford to wait until the final months before the count begins. Census data shapes federal funding for roads, schools, hospitals, and food assistance, along with how legislative districts are drawn. Missing even a small share of residents can cost Arkansas millions of dollars over a decade.
The summit brought together representatives from rural counties, tribal communities, immigrant organizations, and city governments. Sessions covered outreach strategies, the use of trusted local messengers, and ways to reach households that have historically been undercounted, including young children, renters, and people living in remote areas.
Attendees also discussed building volunteer networks now so that momentum carries through the years ahead. Several speakers stressed that preparation, not last minute advertising, will decide whether the state gets its fair share of resources. The coalition plans to hold regional meetings and training sessions in the coming months.
