A&M System names Barton vice chancellor for business affairs

The Texas A&M University System has made its interim leadership permanent, with the board of regents officially naming John Barton as vice chancellor for business affairs. Barton had been filling the role on an interim basis since January, and the board's decision removes any lingering uncertainty about the position's future direction.

In his new capacity, Barton will oversee the system's financial operations, budget planning, and real estate holdings across its 11 universities and state agencies. That is a broad portfolio, touching everything from annual appropriations to long-term capital projects. His office will also handle procurement and risk management for the entire system, which enrolls more than 157,000 students statewide.

Barton is not new to the system's inner workings. Before stepping into the interim role, he spent several years as deputy vice chancellor for business affairs, where he worked closely with the previous officeholder on major initiatives. Colleagues describe him as methodical and steady, someone who prefers clear reporting lines and conservative fiscal forecasts.

The regents did not release a detailed search timeline, but the quick appointment suggests they were satisfied with Barton's performance during the trial period. In a brief statement, board chair Bill Mahomes said Barton had demonstrated strong leadership during a busy legislative session and had earned the confidence of both the chancellors and campus presidents.

Barton will start his full term immediately. He replaces the previous vice chancellor, who left in December for a private sector role. No further personnel changes were announced.
