Alaska Airlines Moves to Join American's Atlantic and Pacific Joint Ventures

American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have unveiled plans that would bring Alaska into American's existing joint businesses across the Atlantic and Pacific. The arrangement would fold Alaska into a pair of alliances that already coordinate schedules, pricing, and routes between American and its international partners.

Under the proposal, the two carriers expect to file for approval and antitrust immunity with the U.S. Department of Transportation. They will also pursue the necessary clearances from international regulators, a process that typically unfolds over several months and involves multiple jurisdictions.

Joint businesses allow airlines to operate as a single entity on certain routes, sharing revenue and aligning flight times. For travelers, that often means smoother connections, more consistent fares, and easier transfers between the two networks. Alaska has long been a domestic partner of American, and this step would deepen that relationship on long haul international routes.

If regulators sign off, Alaska would gain a stronger foothold in transatlantic and transpacific markets without adding its own widebody fleet. American, in turn, would extend its reach into Alaska's West Coast hubs, feeding more passengers onto its international flights.
